Choosing The Right Band by Roger King
This can be pretty tricky. You obviously want a group of musicians who can play music and songs you like, but also stuff all ages will like. Some slow - some fast. You really need a band who can do everything!
A few tips from someone on the other side of the fence!
· Ask for a demo CD. Most bands these days should be able to supply this.
· Check out their website, if they have one. Again, all quality bands will have their own website - some with sample music on
· Go and hear them play at a pub/club venue. Although the material may be slightly different, it will give you a pretty good idea of what the band sounds like and how good they are live.
· Have they got a sample playlist? Its best not to interfere with this too much, as most bands will have arranged the selection of tunes over a number of years to provide just the right sort of mix of songs. However, if you have a special "first dance" song, usually bands will slot this in for you.
· Do they have their own lighting?
· Do they have public liability insurance?
· Do they play music thru their sound system during their breaks?
· Ask how long they normally play for and agree start and finish times (preferably build these into the contract) How many sets? And how long are the breaks? Total playing time? (Most of these timings can only be approx).
· Ask for a firm written quote. Pay the deposit (upto about 20% - no more) and ask for a receipt. Sign contracts (most good bands these days will have contracts) as this protects you both. (and stops the band taking higher paid gigs later on!) Pay the balance on the day - not before (usually the band will ask for cash payment)
· Check out how much space they need and make sure this is available
· Ensure they can gain easy access for unloading without interfering with your other wedding arrangements
· Check how long they would like for setting up and see if this fits with your schedule.
· Ask how many people will be coming with the band (allow for roadies/partners)
· Please ask them about any special requests - most bands are happy to help
· Where are they based?
· An offer of some free food and drink always goes down well with the band!!
· Keep in touch as the day approachs
Hopefully the above pointers will help you to choose the right band for you and allow you and your guests to have a fantastic and fun reception.
